Building environmental governance capacity in Bangladesh
Canadian partner: University of Manitoba Developing country partner: North South University Project duration: March 2007 - March 2013
Project purpose: The project will strengthen institutional and human resource capacity in environmental governance to promote an integrated approach that reconciles pro-poor economic growth with community-based, sustainable resource and environmental management in Bangladesh. It will impact upon poverty reduction and sustainable development throughout Bangladesh and beyond by sharing experience and knowledge on environmental governance innovation and by demonstrating successful local approaches to greening micro-enterprises. Key results to date: During the first year, the project team has set up a local project office. Through a series of curriculum development workshops, 23 course modules for the Masters' program at the North South University and the certificate program at the Institute of Government Studies have been developed. Gender experts from the partner institutions developed a manual and delivered a workshop on incorporating gender issues in the development of the curriculum. A course on gender and environment has also been designed. A one-day workshop on micro-credits greening (raising awareness of good practices for environmental sustainability) has been offered to members of community-based organizations. A country-wide needs and capacity assessment of human resources in the area of natural resource and environmental management and governance is underway. For further information, see the detailed project profile.
