Building Capacity in Food Security in Brazil

Canadian partner: Ryerson University
Developing country partner: Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro
Project duration: April 2004 - September 2010

Project purpose: The project aims to increase the capacity of the Reference Centre in Food and Nutrition Security (CERESAN) at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro to support domestic food and nutrition security councils at the local and state levels in Brazil as well as in Angola. It also aims to increase the capacity of the Brazilian centre to deliver online university credit courses in food security, to support the training of community agents in food security in Brazil and Angola, and to implement and monitor community-based projects in food security.

Key results to date: Four online courses in Portuguese have been developed and delivered: Concepts and Principles in Food and Nutrition Security; Policies and Programs in Food and Nutrition Security; Gender and Food and Nutrition Security; and Research Methods and Evaluation for Food and Nutrition Security. A total of 66 Brazilian and seven Angolan students are enrolled in these courses. Thirty-four Angolans have taken a one-week intensive course. Seven instructors and eight workshop leaders have been trained in Brazil, and two workshop leaders are being trained in Angola. The project has also trained eight Brazilian students in gender analysis and research techniques. Working with municipal public schools, indigenous populations and community food security agents, four pilot projects have provided education and support for food and nutritional security. Six workshops on policies and programs for food security have been held, attracting more than 250 NGO and government workers. More than 220 people received training at 17 workshops for community agents.
