Lao Human Resources for Community Health

Canadian partner: University of Calgary
Developing country partner: University of Health Sciences
Project duration: April 2004 - September 2010

Project purpose: The purpose of the project is to strengthen the capacity of the Lao University of Health Sciences (UHS) to address the training needs of health workers in the country.

Key results to date: The National University of Laos and the ministries of Education and Health have approved a new curriculum plan that began for the medical school class entering in 2004. The final year of the new curriculum will be implemented in the fall of 2008; all curriculum modules have been revised and are more Lao health needs relevant. Students that graduated in Spring 2008 are the last group to study in the old curriculum. The two-year family medicine specialist program was approved by the National University, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health and initiated in 2005. This is the first systematic postgraduate clinical program for new graduates of the Lao University of Health Sciences. The first year of training takes place in Vientiane and the second year is based in four rural training "nodes", each consisting of provincial and district hospitals with associated villages and health centres. Fifty physicians (23 women) successfully completed the two year program by December 2007. The program is ongoing.
