Chair/Chief, Department of Pediatrics
McMaster University's Faculty of Health Sciences, Hamilton Health Sciences, and St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton invite applications and nominations for the joint position of Chair/Chief of the Department of Pediatrics. With over 160 academic and clinical faculty, and several endowed research chairs, the Department of Pediatrics is a leader on the national stage.
McMaster Children's Hospital (MCH), an integral part of Hamilton Health Sciences, is one of the top pediatric academic health sciences centres in Canada. With 120 acute care beds, 40 pediatric clinics, and a full range of specialized inpatient services, MCH is home to one of the country's most impressive Neonatal Intensive Care Units, a cutting-edge Neurometabolic and Neuromuscular Clinic, and a state-of-the-art endosuite for performing minimally invasive surgery on our smallest patients. Founded in 1988, MCH has rapidly become a leader in pediatric evidence-based care, collaborative research and innovative, leading-edge education.
MCH is the second largest children's hospital in Ontario, offering specialized care to more than 150,000 children each year. It is also home to the McMaster Child Health Research Institute (MCHRI) led by McMaster Children's Hospital and McMaster University's Department of Pediatrics, in conjunction with many key research partners.
St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH), operated by the St. Joseph's Health System, and also affiliated with McMaster University, has consistently remained devoted to the provision of quality health care services. Building on its mission and values of excellence in patient care, teaching, and research, SJHH has emerged as one of Canada's leading academic health science centres, serving Hamilton and its surrounding area. St. Joseph's is ranked consistently as a leader in best practice, efficiency benchmarks, and innovation.
The Department of Pediatrics is part of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine within the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University. In addition to the Hamilton campus, the school has two satellite campuses located in Kitchener and St. Catharines, Ontario, providing exciting opportunities for creative approaches to distributed education. The faculty is unique in Canada in training physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, physician assistants, and midwives to work together as part of effective health care teams. Members of the Faculty of Health Sciences currently oversee almost $300 million in research funding at McMaster and its academic partner hospitals. McMaster University has achieved international recognition for its education innovations, including problem based learning, and is ranked as one of only four Canadian universities in the Top 100 in the world.
The Chair/Chief will have the opportunity to play a key role in one of Canada's leading centres for children's health care, community service, teaching, and research. Central to the role will be the leadership and management of the delivery of quality pediatric health care through integration of the academic and clinical interests of the partner institutions. As leader of the academic department, the Chair/Chief will advance the development of clinical, educational, and research activities. The successful candidate will be a proven leader, with excellent administrative experience, strong leadership skills, and a track record of working cooperatively and collegially within a diverse academic and clinical environment. He/she must be eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario, and have specialty certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent).
This is an extraordinary opportunity to play a key leadership role in pediatric health care, teaching, and research in Canada, within an integrated and collaborative environment. All qualified candidates are encouraged to express their interest; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. Hamilton Health Sciences, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton, and McMaster University are strongly committed to employment equity within their community, and to recruiting a diverse faculty and staff.
Consideration of candidates will begin in March 2010, and conclude as early as possible, with the successful candidate taking office as soon thereafter as feasible. Nominations and expressions of interest, including the basis on which the individual merits consideration, should be submitted, in confidence, to the address
