The Department of Geography and Environmental Management (GEM) at the University of Waterloo invites applications for a tenure track position in Tourism Policy and Planning at the assistant or associate professor level. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in geography, tourism and human dimensions of natural resource management, but candidates with expertise in recreation and leisure or tourism business management are also encouraged to apply. Candidates must have a Ph.D. and well developed research and policy expertise in one or more of the following areas: Sustainable tourism, Tourism and international development, Tourism and conservation/ecotourism, Tourism and environmental or cultural change; Tourism development and planning.

Candidates need to have demonstrated the ability to secure research funding, successfully collaborated with public and/or private tourism stakeholders in tourism development and management, and have published in leading journals relevant to their area of expertise. The candidate will contribute to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels in GEM and the Tourism Program. A commitment to excellence in teaching and graduate student supervision is essential.

The successful candidate will also have many opportunities for collaboration within the Faculty of Environment and the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies. The Tourism Program at the University of Waterloo is a two-year, masters level, plan offered jointly by the Department of Geography and Environmental Management and the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies. The program provides a constructive, critical, and interdisciplinary education that is designed to prepare students for careers in government, business, tourism and recreation planning, or consulting. The Department of Geography and Environmental Management is part of the Faculty of Environment, which also includes the Department of Environment and Resource Studies, School of Planning, School of Environment Enterprise and Development, and Centre for Knowledge Integration. The anticipated starting date is September 1, 2010. Applications must include statements of career objectives, areas of research expertise and interests, and the applicant's approach to teaching and learning. Applicants must include with the letter of application a C.V. and the names (with contact information) of four referees. Referees will be contacted for those included in the short list after an initial review of applications that will commence on May 14, 2010 and continue until the position is filled.
