Faculty of Arts
Curator, Mactaggart Art Collection
The University of Alberta is seeking a Curator of the Mactaggart Art Collection.

The Curator will lead and coordinate all curatorial, preservation, and exhibition work with the Mactaggart Art Collection. As this is an academic appointment, research and teaching responsibilities will be negotiated with the successful incumbent. Depending upon qualifications, the Curator will be appointed at the rank of Assistant, Associate or full Professor to either the Department of Art and Design or the Department of East Asian Studies in the Faculty of Arts and will report to the Chair of the Department.

The Mactaggart Art Collection is viewed and accessed almost exclusively by internal University constituents, primarily faculty and their students. It is the objective of the University to make this collection accessible to external audiences with an interest in Chinese and Asian art to advance scholarship and to highlight the high value that the University places on the artistic and other achievements of diverse cultures.

The Curator will be a faculty member within the Faculty of Arts and will work in close collaboration with the Office of the Provost, the Executive Director of the University of Alberta Museums and Collections Services, the China Institute, and the Mactaggart Art Collection Committee. Specific accountabilities include developing and implementing a strategy for actively exhibiting works from the Mactaggart Art Collection, and for attracting contemporary and historical Asian visual art exhibitions to the University of Alberta; enhancing the collection and working closely with the Mactaggart Art Collection Committee in reviewing acquisition and deaccessioning decisions; and collaborating with appropriate members of the University community to ensure that the Mactaggart Art Collection and complementary exhibitions serve to enhance the reputation of the University nationally and internationally, attract external audiences into University environs, and attract new faculty and students to the University of Alberta. Additional responsibilities involve developing and teaching courses as appropriate, supervising undergraduate and graduate students working on topics related to the collection, and serving on graduate committees in Art and Design, East Asian Studies, and other Departments.

The ideal candidate is a leader who has a passion for the visual arts and a demonstrated commitment to exploration, exposition, education and research of Asian art. A PhD is strongly preferred; however, a MFA or MA in an appropriate discipline with considerable relevant experience will be considered in exceptional circumstances. Additional requirements include expertise in Chinese history, culture and visual arts, curatorial leadership responsibility in an art museum, university or similar institution, and a distinguished record which includes teaching, scholarly publication and professional accomplishment. Knowledge of the methods, techniques and procedures involved in the interpretation and exhibition of traveling collections with a familiarity with and enthusiasm for academic institutions and their educational and research values is preferred. The ability to work successfully with donors, community leaders, artists and curators, educators, faculty, students, and other museums to strengthen visual arts collections is important.
