Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC; nsac.ca) is a small research-intensive university located in the centre of beautiful Nova Scotia at Truro-Bible Hill. Offering technical, undergraduate and graduate programs in agriculture and its related life and social science disciplines, NSAC educates future leaders and generates knowledge and solutions for healthy, sustainable societies.
Duties for faculty positions:
These tenure-track positions in the Department of Engineering are required to contribute to teaching, research and service. Teaching responsibilities include developing and delivering courses in the first two years of the professional engineering program as well as other undergraduate, and/or graduate level courses in the applicant's area of expertise. Incumbents are also expected to contribute to on-going program development. Each is required to develop a self-sustaining research program with the support of industry partners that addresses the needs of the region in their identified discipline areas. Scholarship will contribute to the expanding knowledge of the profession and complements existing strengths in the department. Other responsibilities include the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students, and the training of highly qualified personnel (HQP). Secondary responsibilities include representation of NSAC on committees, task forces, at workshops and on external bodies.
Duties for Department Head:
With a reduced teaching load, the department head will lead and represent the engineering department for a five-year term, renewable once. He/she will work with faculty and administration to meet the current and future goals of faculty, students, the department and university. He/she also will manage human, financial and physical resources within the department, including the oversight of the Bio-environmental Engineering Centre.
Qualifications for faculty positions:
Minimal qualifications are an earned Ph.D. in Engineering or Associated Science from a recognized university in the discipline area identified. Eligibility for membership in Engineers Nova Scotia and/or the Nova Scotia Institute of Agrologists is required. Applicants must demonstrate potential to develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program, to lead multidisciplinary teams, to publish original research in peer reviewed journals and to obtain competitive research grants. He/she must be able to teach and effectively communicate in both verbal and written formats. A demonstrated ability to supervise graduate student research and HQP training, strong leadership skills, interpersonal skills, and an ability to work in co-operation with a number of university, government, and industry groups are desirable assets. The individual must be highly motivated with sound judgement, high integrity, and strong organizational skills, and have the ability to deal effectively with students, colleagues and the general public.
Faculty expertise is sought in each of the following areas:
1. Competition #2689CH-CB: In mechanization, GPS/GIS, sensors and controllers or other precision agriculture technologies. Computer programming, electro-mechanical design, electronics, and digital communications are considered essential skill areas. Experience in the application of precision agriculture to cropping systems is particularily relevant..
2. Competition #2690CH-CB: Biofuels, combustion technology, biomaterial conversion, evaluation of quality, and/or effect of technologies on the use and application of alternate fuels.
3. Competition #2691CH-CB: Modern engineering techniques applicable to controlled environment systems opportunities for a range of agricultural and/or aquacultural situations, including animal housing.
4. Competition #2692CH-CB: Bio-waste management and processing systems for a range of waste streams including waste conversion, field and lab analysis, system oriented studies and development of innovation opportunities.
Qualifications for Department Head:
Applicants for Department Head position must in addition to the faculty expertise be able to show successful experience in teaching and research at the Associate or Full Professor level. He/she should demonstrate a record of strong leadership, interpersonal skills, high integrity, and an ability to work in co-operation with a number of universities, government, industry and producer/processor groups. A commitment to team building, demonstrated visionary abilities, business acumen and strategic planning are highly desirable, as is evidence of active participation and recognition in professional associations at the local, national and international levels.
Salary Range:
Commensurate with education and experience.
