Tier I Canada Research Chair in Visual Analytics

The University of Manitoba is seeking applications or nominations for a Tier I Canada Research Chair (CRC). These chairs were established by the Government of Canada to foster world-class research excellence in Canadian Universities (www.chairs.gc.ca). The chair will be expected to pursue a vigorous research program in the field of visual analytics in the Department of Computer Science in the Faculty of Science.
This position represents an exciting opportunity for experienced researchers who are recognized internationally as leaders in their field. Applicants should have am earned doctoral degree in Computer Science and hold an academic position at the rank of Professor, or Associate Professor with qualifications for immediate promotion to Professor, and must have an outstanding publication and funding record that demonstrates a successful and active research program directly related to Visual Analytics, commensurate with the requirements for a Tier I Canada Research Chair. Strength in one or more of the complementary areas of Human-Computer Interaction, Information and Data Visualization, Data Mining, or Computer-Supported Collaboration would be assets.
The Department of Computer Science provides an active and collegial environment, with 24 research faculty, 6 teaching faculty, approximately 70 graduate students and 300 undergraduate students. It has been located in the new Engineering and Information Technology Complex since 2005, which provides space for 17 research labs. There is a thriving Human-Computer Interaction lab with 2 faculty members, 12 graduate students, and approximately $250,000 of support from NSERC, WED, and MITACS. The Faculty of Science Strategic Research Plan identifies Visual Analytics as an area of importance. Opportunities exist for a variety of collaborations - the Virtual Reality Centre in the University's SmartPark, TRLabs where work is done on medical visualizations, the Memory and Cognition lab and the Perception and Action lab in the Department of Psychology, the Institute for Biodiagnostics, a new Experimental Media Research Group, and a data visualization facility accessible through AccessGrid and WestGrid. The Province of Manitoba has a program to provide Virtual Reality Application Funds.
Winnipeg is a mature city of some 700,000 people with rich recreational and cultural opportunities. It combines the amenities of urban life with easy access to the countryside, lakes, and forests. The review of applications will begin in March, 2010, and will continue until the position is filled. The position is available as early as July 1, 2011. The appointment of all Chairs is subject to final approval by the CRC Secretariat. The appointment will be tenured with limited teaching responsibilities.
