CIFAR's Junior Fellow Academy
Announces New Fellowships

The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research brings together top international researchers to tackle many of the most interesting and pressing questions of our time. Our Junior Fellow Academy offers gifted, early career researchers the unique opportunity to participate in CIFAR's global research network and to closely collaborate, and be mentored by, some of Canada's and the world's best researchers.

Junior Fellows take part in one of CIFAR's innovative research programs, where researchers meet regularly to establish new frameworks for thinking about the world with the potential to improve human health and the environment, transform technology, build strong societies, understand human culture and even chart the universe. To enhance leadership skills within an interdisciplinary network of peers, CIFAR also brings together Junior Fellows from all twelve programs for separate Academy meetings.

CIFAR Junior Fellowships are held in conjunction with a university appointment. Most typically, Junior Fellows work as postdoctoral fellows under the direct supervision of one or more CIFAR program members. Junior Fellow applicants in the social sciences and humanities may hold a junior faculty position.

Eligibility: Individuals who have completed or will complete their PhD no more than three years prior to advertised Junior Fellowship starting dates are eligible to apply. Successful candidates will have an outstanding record of scholarship, excellent communication skills and strong potential to collaborate with researchers in a CIFAR program. Please see advertised positions on CIFAR's website for possible additional requirements.

Duration: Five years. The first two years are funded, as below, with Junior Fellows embedded in a CIFAR program. Thereafter, CIFAR will cover the cost for Junior Fellow Alumni to attend Academy meetings for an additional three years.

Value*: For postdoctoral fellows (annually for two years):

  • $70,000 CDN/US for salary and benefits
  • $5,000 CDN/US for research support
  • For junior faculty members (annually for two years):
  • $50,000 CDN/US for research support
  • *US dollar values apply when positions are held outside of Canada.

How to Apply: Specific Junior Fellowship positions in CIFAR's programs and application instructions are posted at http://www.cifar.ca/JFA. The application deadline is January 21, 2013. New positions and deadlines will be posted every fall and spring. Visit today for more information about CIFAR and the Junior Fellow Academy.
