Reporting to the President and Vice-Chancellor, the University Secretary is a senior policy advisor, is a member of the senior management team, and is responsible for providing leadership, direction, and management related to Vancouver Island University's bicameral system of governance. Administering the governance of the University by providing consistent strategic advisory and administrative support to the Board, Senate, their standing committees, and a number of ad hoc committees, the University Secretary is responsible for interpreting and implementing Board and Senate bylaws, policies, and procedures, providing strategic advice and guidance where necessary. As a senior member of the University leadership, the University Secretary plays a key role in the achievement of the goals set out in the University's Integrated Plan.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • A progressively responsible career path supported by a professional or advanced degree. A degree in law, governance, public policy, or business administration would be a desirable asset;
  • A demonstrated track record of working collegially and collaboratively within a highly complex environment, ideally within a post-secondary institution;
  • A record of success in leading and managing policy development, implementation, and compliance;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted governance principles, bicameral systems, and experience supporting governors and senior leaders in the achievement of best governance practices;
  • Experience leading and managing human and financial resources, including preparing budgets;
  • Demonstrated success in providing leadership, guidance, and mentoring to a diverse team;
  • The experience and ability to serve the needs of multiple stakeholders, while maintaining the integrity of the University's governing bodies;
  • A stellar reputation and strong relationship management skills with the demonstrated ability to forge and cement strong partnerships and interact effectively with the Board, President, government, and all levels of staff.
