Description: Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Student Life, the Director ensures that the University of Toronto provides exemplary practices that support students' self-exploration of career objectives through the development of career curriculum and programs.

The Director has primary responsibility for the management of a team of professionals whose objective is to support self-directed student learning as it applies to career exploration, career decision-making and employment preparation to assist students to integrate their interests, abilities, experiences and values in the development of their career aspirations. The Director will model a commitment towards collaborative partnerships with academic and co-curricular departments and services, external employers, and other relevant constituents.

With an understanding of student development and learning, the Director will introduce and enhance services that enable intentional, personal, relevant and action-based programming. S/he will ensure the services of the Career Centre provide a wide variety of experiential, interactive, entrepreneurial and reflective opportunities that help students become self-sufficient in setting and achieving their career goals and life purpose. The Director must be strategic in the allocation of resources and work within a collaborative framework. S/he must develop evaluation measures to assess the effectiveness of the Centre's work.

The Career Centre serves over 60,000 undergraduate and graduate students and recent alumni, at the St. George campus and works in partnership with several other career centres on campus. The Centre is part of the Division of Student Life and the Director will seek opportunities for integrative programming with other departments in the division as well as across the University. The Director must also encourage and support tri-campus initiatives and relationships with the Career Centres at the Scarborough and Mississauga campuses to ensure that all students at the University of Toronto benefit in the career opportunities and resources available.

Qualifications (MINIMUM)
EDUCATION:

Must have a post-graduate degree (Masters) in Adult Education, Student Development, Higher Education, Developmental or Counselling Psychology or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Education should include a focus on adult education principles, program/curriculum planning within a developmental framework, evaluation and assessment, and issues in higher education.

EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of 7 years' experience as a leader and manager committed to excellence in meeting the needs of students in a post-secondary environment. The ability to lead and manage in a complex and decentralized educational setting. Experience leading change. Experience in developing experiential and student self-directed learning opportunities. Demonstrated understanding of the increasing importance of the role of career education within the context of competency development. The ability to articulate a vision, and formulate plans to achieve an integrated service model.

SKILLS:
Ability to design co-curricular curriculum in an experiential learning framework.
Ability to design assessment and learning outcomes for all programs offered.
Well-developed computer skills in word-processing, spreadsheet applications and presentation software (PowerPoint, Prezi, etc.).
Excellent management and leadership skills, ability to mentor, and the ability to effectively lead and manage change.
Planning, organizational and analytical skills - in particular skills in managing both annual and sessional planning process.
Project management skills; ability to direct large-scale projects, e.g. re-development of a website or selection of computer systems.
Aptitude and familiarity with budget accountability, including forecasts and multi-year budget projections.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and presentation skills to large and small audiences.
Research, analytical and reporting skills related to current industry trends and best practices.

OTHER:
Must have a strong understanding of the academic environment and a commitment to student development.
High degree of political acuity and judgment.
Ability to interact effectively and cooperatively with individuals at all levels and build sustainable relationships.
Ability to develop programs that enhance the student experience at the post-secondary level.

Notes: Occasional evening and weekend work required during semester start-up and for special events.
