The University of Ottawa is seeking applicants for the position of Research Director of the Human Rights Research and Education Centre.
Founded in 1981, the Human Rights Research and Education Centre promotes research training and support, and the creation and dissemination of knowledge and analysis with respect to human rights. On the strength of its links with the Faculty of Law (Common Law and Civil Law Sections) and the Faculty of Social Sciences, it pursues its mission in an interdisciplinary, bilingual and bijural spirit. In recent years, the Centre has innovated by putting the emphasis on research on socio-economic rights and by using information technology to further its teaching and knowledge dissemination mission. The ideal candidate holds a doctorate in law or equivalent, will be able to work in English and French, has a demonstrated track record in human rights research and has an established capacity to teach and to supervise graduate students at the masters and doctorate level. A candidate with a master degree in law and an experience in supervising doctoral students may also be considered. Excellent knowledge of human rights issues at the international and Canadian level is required; knowledge of human rights issues in the Latin American or African context is an asset. The candidate will have recognized skills with respect to leadership, team direction and obtaining research funding, which are necessary to inspire the Centre's research and learning community.
The candidate selected will become a member of the Faculty of Law, at a rank reflecting his or her experience and accomplishments. Depending on experience and accomplishments, the candidate selected will also be eligible to hold the Gordon F. Henderson Chair in human rights.
