Manager, Learning Technologies
Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning
The Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning is Vancouver Island University's teaching, learning and technology centre. We work strategically with VIU's Academic Plan and collaboratively with academic faculties and departments, and faculty members to promote and support innovation and excellence in the creation and development of high quality and curriculum-supported learning opportunities, through the appropriate use and integration of research-informed teaching tools, interactive technologies, and vibrant learning environments, which will enhance learning at Vancouver Island University.
1. Team Leader for Learning Technologies Staff:
Provide team leadership for seven learning technologies support staff. Interpret and apply collective agreements, hire and discipline staff and undertake role as staff administrator. Supervise each member's activity, facilitate productive and positive work environment and ensure compliance with policies and procedures. Plan, facilitate and/or participate in frequent and varied professional development, mentorship and coaching activities.
2. Manage Planning and Delivery of Support for All Learning Technologies:
Manage high quality faculty and student learning technology support across four campuses and many onsite and off-site hosted learning technologies platforms through the operation of an incident and knowledge management system.
3. Manage Development and Deployment of Training and Education Initiatives:
Ensure the development and deployment of quality training and education experiences for faculty and students around all learning technologies, especially supporting the Information Technology Plan - IT Competencies Action Items 1, 3 and 4. 4. Manage Technology Integration Projects, IT Plan Action Items and Learning Technology Initiatives for the Centre:
Proactively manage and communicate many technology integration projects across all faculties and campuses.
5. Maintain Strong Vendor and Client Relationships:
Communicate with learning technologies vendors, support units, and departments within and external to VIU on academic systems and software.
6. Manage Development of Fully Online, Blended and Web-Enhanced Courses:
Work with administration, faculty and Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Specialists to develop and deploy technology-mediated learning policies, procedures and guidelines related to supporting the growth and development of learning with technologies.
7. Plan and Manage Deployment of New Learning Technologies:
Monitor, investigate and research new learning technologies. Collaborate and communicate with faculty, administration, staff, consortiums and other institutions.

Master's Degree in an education-related learning technologies field (e.g., teaching and learning technologies, educational technology, online learning, technology-mediated studies, curriculum development in technology integration). Three to five years of experience including: supervisory experience in a unionized environment; effectively leading and collaborating with cross-functional and multi-disciplinary teams while establishing priorities and meeting deadlines with minimal direction; experience in most of these areas: support desk/customer service responsibility and experience, incident management software, learning management systems, technology infrastructure, learning technologies deployment, policy and procedure development. An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.
Experience in learning technology education, training and presentations (e.g., developing, deploying and assessing training and education offerings for learners be it informal, stand-alone or embedded self-paced activities) for functions, features and operation of technologies for learning
Experience at the post-secondary level in the design, development and deployment of online learning (blended, web-enhanced and/or fully online) and ability to oversee the design and development of interactive learning experiences in a learning management system (LMS) or alternative LMS-like environments and have comfort using the tools and resources to assist faculty in building learning in an online environment (e.g., for fully online or blended delivery)
Strong project management experience, organizational skills and management of projects in educational and learning technologies. Excellent strategic planning and resourcing skills (e.g., plan conference, develop resources).
Vendor management experience demonstrated in working with external technology vendors and internal IT relationships.
Excellent knowledge of current practices of learning technologies and use in post-secondary teaching and learning. Confidence and comfort in working with and rapidly learning new educational technology resources and devices (e.g., Web 2.0, cloud computing, mobile computing, clickers, video streaming, etc.). Have active and ongoing professional development portfolio in learning technologies.
Developing and maintaining respectful working relationships with management and administration. Mature judgment, diplomacy and confidentiality. Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and business acumen.
Possess analytical reasoning, problem solving, time management, planning, project management, supervisory, administrative, and independent working and organizational skills.
Flexibility to travel between campuses and adjust work hours as required.
Must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record (as specified in Vancouver Island University policy and procedures).
