TESL Canada is a 35-year-old national professional not-for-profit organization for administrators and teachers of English as a second language. Its mandate is to promote excellence in the teaching and learning of English as a second or additional language in partnership with its constituent provincial and territorial associations, and like-minded national and international organizations.

TESL Canada now seeks the leadership of a new Executive Director for an interim period. In this critical role, the Executive Director contributes his/her leadership and expertise to ensure TESL Canada continues to perform at the level needed to advance its goals and strategic direction. Reporting to the National Board of Directors, the Executive Director will be responsible for the strategic development, partnerships, resourcing, implementation, and ongoing management of all TESL Canada's programs and services. Managing the organization's strategic growth for its members and supporting operational excellence in service delivery will be key priorities for the new Executive Director.

Key Duties: The Executive Director provides leadership to the organization by planning, organizing, directing and administering all services, programs and operations. The ED of TESL Canada ensures that TESL Canada Standards are maintained and delivered uniformly. S/he is an ambassador of the organization to the external public and is responsible for management of staff and the day-to-day operations.

Specific areas of responsibility include:

  1. Governance, Policy and Planning
  2. Financial Management
  3. Human Resources
  4. Fund Development
  5. Public Relations and Community Development
  6. Programs and Services (Standards, Conference) Management

The ideal candidate brings a track record of success in a senior leadership role within a multifaceted non-profit organization with service delivery, complex stakeholder relationships and a strong service orientation. Knowledge of TESL, immigrant/refugee settlement issues, relationships with key provincial and federal ministries, and responding to RFP opportunities is an asset. This person is a strong leader with highly effective communication and interpersonal skills and an engaging style. He/she will bring operational, financial and human resource management strength, and have the ability to effectively engage with multiple stakeholders through a collaborative leadership style that sincerely believes in building strong relationships across the TESL community.

The position requires :
  • management experience in the not-for-profit sector, including supervisory experience working with office and contract personnel
  • University graduation in a related discipline. Minimum bachelor's degree. Master's an asset.
  • financial management and budgeting skills
  • fundraising and grant writing experience
  • experience working with a volunteer board of directors, committees and like-minded organizations
  • experience in event and conference planning
  • some travel is involved

The applicant must also be self-motivated, demonstrate administration and computer skills, be able to work independently and interact with provincial counterparts. Knowledge of the TESL/TEFL or settlement sector would be a definite asset.

This is a contract position until July 31, 2014. It may be possible to extend / apply for a permanent position at that time.
