The Division of Continuing Professional Development, Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Manitoba, is seeking a Technical Editor in support of the project Oral-Systemic Health Education for Non-Dental Healthcare Providers. This curriculum is the first and only inter-professionally vetted, comprehensive resource about oral health for non-dental healthcare providers i.e., physicians, nurses, and other healthcare disciplines. The curriculum is composed of 25-30 case-based modules which are co-authored by experts, published as journals and reformatted for multi-media and online education.

As an important member of the Medical-Dental Joint Initiatives Group, the Medical Writer/Editor will provide a comprehensive level of support including basic, substantive and developmental editorial services. The successful candidate must demonstrate a keen ability to understand science and medicine, and a strong ability to analyze and synthesize complex information into effective communications for audiences of varied healthcare disciplines.

Position start date: As soon as possible

Estimated weekly hours: 16 - 24 hours per week, based on a 40 hour work week (0.4 to 0.6 FTE)

Salary Range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Determining and applying appropriate levels of editorial treatment to materials of various projects
  • Rewriting and integrating reviewer comments which may substantively change content of documents
  • Assisting authors in developing creative text from an idea, raw material or early drafts
  • Advising authors on content organization, supplemental materials, making revisions, rewriting or rearranging sections when necessary
  • Ensuring readability of documents- that information is clear, concise, and complete
  • Querying authors about inconsistencies, contradictions or gaps in information, and issues inadvertently raised but not addressed by authors
  • Performing data verification, fact checking, comparing manuscript statements to cited sources
  • Performing excellent proof reading to ensure style and consistency such as in formatting, cross checking citations with reference list, suggesting improvements in syntax, querying authors as needed
  • Creating the process for peer review of scientific documents
  • Selecting appropriate reviewers for submissions and developing and maintaining a database of suitable reviewers, ensuring that databases reflect appropriate reviewers from the various communities of healthcare providers
  • Conducting the peer review process ensuring single blind review is preserved
  • Developing clear instructions for authors and peer reviewers
  • Creating templates the layout of materials (e.g., published and online courses, marketing materials, Websites, press releases)
  • Tracking images, tables and other graphics within manuscripts, and ensuring clinical photographs are of high enough resolution to publish in printed versions of the courses
  • Communicating with other team members, (i.e., educational specialist, medical illustrator), and authors to expedite the process of converting a manuscript into a course, both print and online versions
  • Ensuring the proofs are accurate prior to printing
  • Serving as a supervisor for copyeditors, and mentor for interns

Qualifications and experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in English, Technical Writing, Journalism or Communication; Master's Degree preferred
  • 1-3 years of demonstrated experience in technical writing or editing in a healthcare field
  • Demonstrated knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of medical writing
  • Experience with a variety of writing styles: technical, creative, and marketing
  • Experience in Web design and computer graphics would be helpful
  • Proven technical writing and editing skills
  • Superior command of the English language including rules and usage
  • Strong research skills including gathering and analyzing data from multiple sources (e.g., content experts, academics, authoritative agencies) to write manuscripts, reports, training materials, Web content)
  • Superb interpersonal communication skills, particularly when technical information must be conveyed in a clear and convincing way
  • Ability to meet aggressive deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications and publication software, preferably Indesign
  • Ability to function effectively as part of a team
