Shop Technologies Manager
Permanent Full-Time Excluded Position

We are seeking a Shop Technologies Manager to provide leadership to our Shop and Studio Technical Services team. Reporting to the Vice President Academic + Provost, and working collaboratively with Academic Leaders, Operations Administrators, Research, faculty and staff, the STM ensures that resources are effectively developed and deployed to provide optimal technical support to the credit and non-credit curriculum and research needs of the University. The STM establishes and implements short and long term strategies for the development of innovative curriculum, research support, and technical services with an emphasis on best practices in terms of standards of safety, excellence in individual student and classroom instructional support, and the fostering of teamwork. The STM is responsible for forecasting, developing and managing the operating and capital budgets for all areas under his/her supervision as well as the creation and implementation of operational policies and procedures for the area. The STM, through his/her leadership of the Technical Services Coordinators and Studio Technicians, is responsible for the smooth functioning of instructional shops, studios, labs and other resource centres including planning, upgrading, inventory, and maintenance of all instructional equipment and supplies. Key to this role is the establishment of effective relationships and communication with technicians, Deans, faculty, other administrators, staff and students in order to pro-actively, efficiently and effectively coordinate technical services and support.

With the move to a new campus in the next three years this is an exciting time for Emily Carr University. The STM will play a key role in the planning and transitioning to Emily Carr's new campus.

The successful candidate will have:

  • University degree or diploma in related fields, plus post-secondary training in art production or related courses covering both the creative and technical aspects of working in plastics, wood and metal, and other shop-based fabrication technologies.
  • Five to ten years' relevant experience in progressively responsible technical services positions in a visual arts/ design/media environment, including supervisory and budget management experience in a complex, unionized environment. Experience should include a wide range of shop technologies, and demonstrate a thorough knowledge of wood and metal shop technology and safety.
  • Broad knowledge of general art practices and processes including digital fabrication and printing technologies and their applications to art and design practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of safety and other pertinent regulations governing the day-to-day operations of the program areas, studios and work areas.

The successful candidate will also have demonstrated:
  • Demonstrated strength in leadership skills and the ability to foster employee development, teamwork, innovation and collaboration.
  • Highly developed organizational and administrative skills including demonstrated skills in setting priorities, working within tight timelines, problem solving, conflict resolution and adaptability.
  • Sound judgment, strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, and the ability to establish effective working relationships with all members of the Emily Carr community and external contacts.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills including the ability to coach studio technicians on shop technology and safety.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Considerable knowledge of budget administration, with proficiency in Microsoft Office suite with an emphasis on spreadsheet skills and data base management.
